Really Random Tuesday #10: Memoirs I Want to Read, New Titles, and Pumpkin Ice Cream

Welcome! Really Random Tuesday is a way to post odds and ends--announcements, musings, quotes, photos--any blogging and book-related things you can think of. If you're inspired by this idea, feel free to copy the button and use it on your own blog. Please leave a link in the comments if you’re participating.

I can't believe this is my tenth RRT post! I am not sure I will continue numbering these posts (it might get a bit awkward if I continue to, say, Really Random Tuesday #117). Anyway, thanks for stopping by, and special thanks to the wonderful bloggers who are participating in RRT this week. Please be sure to visit Giving Reading a Chance, Serendipity, Spiral Upwards, and the bookworm. (If this keeps up I will need to add a Mr. Ms. Linky!)

Marlo Thomas was one of my favorite actresses when I was a child. I loved her show, That Girl. She was so pretty and funny--I wanted to be her. I'd love to read her memoir, Growing Up Laughing: My Story and the Story of Funny, which "takes us on a funny and heartwarming adventure, from her Beverly Hills childhood, to her groundbreaking creation of That Girl and Free to Be . . . You and Me, to her rise as one of America's most beloved actress-comediennes, to her marriage to talk-show king Phil Donahue". I'm also very interested in reading Keith Richards' memoir, Life. Although as a teenager I had a mad crush on his band mate, Mick Jagger, I also secretly liked Keith a bit, too. After reading about his book in the NY Times on Sunday, I know it would be fascinating to me.

As much as I want to read these books, I don't really understand either of these titles. I mean, shouldn't Keith Richards' book be entitled My Life? I'll just call it Keith! As for the other title--what's meant by the "the story of funny"? I'll just call it Marlo! Or maybe I just need to read these books to find out. :)

To usher in the season, my daughter and I made some pumpkin ice cream last night. It is so easy to make. We used a Donvier ice cream maker but you could probably just use your freezer instead. If possible, use organic ingredients.

Combine 2 cups of whipping cream, 1 cup of whole milk, 1 cup of canned pumpkin, slightly less than 1 cup of sugar, 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla, and a dash of cinnamon. If mixture is lumpy, briefly use electric beater. Pour into pre-frozen canister of Donvier ice cream maker and "crank" every few minutes. In about 45 minutes the ice cream is ready to enjoy. Store in freezer. Makes about 1 quart.

I thought the ice cream would be a bright orange color from the pumpkin, but it isn't.

I know what I'm having for lunch today.

  1. I want to read both of those books too! I adored That Girl and Ann Marie!

  2. I want to read the Keith Richards one!
    The icecream sounds yummy :)

  3. I do not know either of these celebrities but Marlo Thomas sure is gorgeous. i wish I can get that ice cream maker, I will be making ice cream everyday LOL! That pumpkin ice cream looks delicious.

  4. I'm participating this week! On my personal blog, I hope that's okay: http://spiralupwards.amandagignac.com/2010/10/really-random-tuesday-nano-memories-goals.html

That pumpkin ice cream looks SOOOOO good!

  5. Amanda, of course it's okay to participate on your personal blog. I am honored. :)

  6. I have never seen That Girl although I loved Marlo Thomas as Rachel's mom in FRIENDS. Both the books look interesting and I love the look of the pumpkin icecream. Thanks for sharing :)

  7. Never heard of both these celebs. :(

The pumpkin icecream looks amazing. Never had a chance to try pumpkin icecream. :)

  8. Pumpkin ice-cream? I'm sure it must be one of those things that tastes nicer than it sounds - it does look yummy though.

  9. I have been hearing so much about the Keith Richards book, and although I am not a fan, I am intensely interested in this book. There has been mega hype surrounding it for such a long time! Also, pumpkin ice-cream sounds and looks fabulous, and I am going to have to try it. I doubt anyone in my house would eat it besides me, but that is totally ok because it means I don't have to share! Thanks for this great post, Suko!

  10. I am not familiar with Marla Thomas - she isn't well known over here, so I hope you enjoy it. The pumpkin icecream looks fantastic. Thanks for running such a fabulous meme.

  11. Vaishnavi, I didn't know that Marlo Thomas had a part on Friends. Thanks for stopping by! :)

Priya, thank you! Do try pumpkin ice cream. It is super easy to make and quite delicious!

Petty, it is good! Think of pumpkin pie, and you'll get an idea of a sweet, pumpkin-y dessert (unless you don't care for pumpkin pie).

Zibilee, I only recently heard about Keith Richards' new book (where have I been?), but it sounds really interesting to me. Thank you for your wonderful comments.

Vivienne, I appreciate your kind words. And I enjoy your RRT posts so much! I visited England many years ago, and your pictures always make me yearn to return.

Thanks for all the great comments!

  12. Sorry for the late notice ...I briefly reviewed 'Kaleidoscope' that I won from you on my oct.22 post.

    Ice cream ice cream...super yummo!

  13. Pumpkin ice cream sounds so good!

I'd love to read the Marlo Thomas book. I used to love her in That Girl.

  14. I was all ready to take about Keith Richards and Marlo Thomas but then I saw that pumpkin ice cream recipe and now it's all I can think about!

  15. As a writer, I have to mention that another thing we have Marlo Thomas to thank for is that old but wonderful book, Free To Be You And Me: at the time it was a new way to talk to kids.

  16. I always miss posting a RRT! I'll have to put it on my calendar so I don't forget.
So I agree the titles to those books don't make any sense! Maybe you have to read it to understand the title meaning. I watched That Girl growing up too! Loved that show and it brings to mind The Flying Nun, I think it was on the same time . Anyway both books sound really good.
    Sorry I 'm rambling :) - Have a great weekend!

  17. Oh Marlo was one of the girls mom on Friends. Umm I think it was Jennifer Anistons character.

  18. I loved Marlo too!! That Girl and Sally Field's in The Flying Nun were my favs!! Thanks for the trip down memory lane Suko!
