Aloha Friday

Aloha readers! I discovered a new-to-me meme on Ann's Reading Corner today, Aloha Friday, hosted by Kailani from An Island Life. It's not a meme solely for book bloggers, but it caught my eye and I not only decided to try it, but added it to my Memes page as well. The idea is to take it easy on Friday, the start of the weekend, which is usually a time to relax. In keeping with this, the premise of this meme is to pose a simple question (one that doesn't require a lengthy response), and also to visit other participating blogs. For more details, and to read Kailani's post, please visit An Island Life.

Because this is a book blog, my question relates to reading. My question is (besides, how do I select a simple question?): how do I carve out some reading time when I know my weekend will be very busy in a social sense?

I'm sure I'm not the only book blogger or reader with this problem. I have some great reading to begin this weekend for my challenge, The Jodi Picoult Project--I just received my copy of The Pact in the mail and I can't wait to start reading it--but I'm not sure I'll be able to read much as this will be a very social weekend in a house full of people. I think I'll have to "play it by ear", to find moments when I can sequester myself and read for a bit (which is often how I manage to read, anyway). Or, I may have to postpone my reading for a few more days. Maybe my question is not that simple after all! If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know.

  1. I have my book with me for any free moment. While hubby is driving I read, when I use the bathroom I read, when I'm waiting for a page to load I read, you get the idea.

  2. I hardly ever find time to read on the weekends because we're always on the go, but I always carry a book with me and sometimes squeeze in a few pages when I'm in the car.

  3. I keep my Kindle in my purse for any free moment : )

  4. I read in the mornings for an hour or so, and then in the afternoon and evening for a few hours. I am not much of a TV viewer. I tape everything I think I may watch, and than I don't have to set through all those commercials. Saves a lot of time too.

When their is company, reading goes on the back burner for the time being.

  6. I carry my current read with me wherever I go. You never know when you'll get some free time.

    Welcome to Aloha Fridays!

  7. I carry my Kindle with me so if I can steal some moments of reading, I do. Usually, though, I end up reading late at night before going to sleep - and end up in the 'just one more chapter' mode and am not liking when the alarm wakes me up the next morning... ;)

  8. The reading will wait - enjoy all the people. Jodi Picoult is coming here in March - I bought my ticket yesterday.

  9. Kathy, you're right, the reading can wait. You're lucky to be able to see Jodi Picoult. I'd love to be able to interview her (maybe you will).

Thanks to all for the comments and ideas. This is a fun and friendly meme.

  10. Hmmmm…in answer to your question, perhaps a "gastrointestinal" problem will crop up and you can hide out in the bathroom … with your book!

  11. I'd enjoy brief moments with breakfast and before bed and then enjoy the company the rest of the time. Have fun!

  12. Ha! I struggle to find time to read on the weekends but I can always count on a few hours after they go to bed. As long as I can keep my eyes open that is :)

  13. My solution to this problem is to do all of my socializing, shopping, and visiting early in the day, and then devoting the later afternoon and the evening to reading. Often I read late into the night, and then get up early to start all the other stuff! Great question, Suko!

  14. It's always difficult to find time to read ! I know that ! I try to find time in the morning after breakfast and just after lunch. But sometimes....

  15. Aloha Suko :) I can relate, my reading time does get set aside during busy times. This weekend is a perfect example of that. I do try to get some quiet reading time in when I wake up in the morning with my cup of coffee at hand while everyone is still asleep. I'll also read a bit before falling asleep at night.
Hope you are enjoying your weekend!

  16. I try to read before bed sometimes or when everyone is into their own thing for a moment.

  17. Oh a difficult one that, a social life has an awful way of getting in the way of my reading as well.

  18. Thanks for all the comments. As it turned out, I was not the only person who wished to spend a bit of time reading; others brought books as well, and some of us sat together at times with our books opened. But it was hard to resist conversation!

  19. I've been meaning to join this meme but I haven't gotten around to it.

  20. That is very cool that others brought books as well. I had the same problem this past weekend. I wanted to read, but I spent the entire weekend on my feet cooking and cleaning for the family. They were all in town for Penelope's first birthday. I did manage to sneak in a bit of reading before bed . . .
