Hot Tea and May Gray

Happy Cinco de Mayo! May is one of my favorite months, although it can get awfully warm here. Today's cool and cloudy though, with a chance of rain tonight (and we definitely need the rain). Days like this are perfect for sitting indoors with a book and a steaming cup of oolong tea. I just finished reading Ruby Holler, Sharon Creech's Carnegie Medal winner. What a magical book for children and adults alike! Humor and inspiration go hand in hand in this saga of Dallas and Florida, orphan twins. The twins show a great deal of imagination, and the author, Sharon Creech, who has written several books for children, also has a thriving imagination. Once again, I am refreshed by the power and beauty of imagination. There is not a dull page in this book!

As always, I welcome your feedback! Can anyone suggest a good title for this post? I thought "Imagination" might be good but am open to better ideas. (Thanks, Lori!!) Please take the poll at the end of the page (if you can choose)!

  2. I don't know if it's just me, but I am under the impression that there is a much larger collection of imaginative literature for young people today. (Or I wanted to grow up too soon and skipped alot of good books when I was young.) I have really enjoyed the books that I read with my daughter for our book club. They present so many wonderful scenarios and possibilities. I felt the title of the last one we read by Sharon Creech summed it up so beautifully in it's title "Bloomability". I agree, Susan, that Creech has a wonderful gift for writing that humors us and inspires us.

  3. Wow, Susan! This is a wonderful tool to record your thoughts for your friends AND your children to read. Your personal thoughts and feelings change with every turn of life and it will be fun to look back and see where you were and how you've grown. Memories fade with time, but this will be a constant record and an excellent learning experience for you and your children. Congratulations on taking a step into this "new stuff." I'm not there yet (but I can handle e-mail).

  4. Laura, if you can post a comment on a blog, you ARE there. This is all very, very new to me. I set up a blog in Nov. 2006, but that's all I knew how to do. I deleted my original (awful) entry and started fresh.
THANK YOU for visiting the blog. Please check in again when you can. Your comments are always encouraged and welcomed. : )

  5. Lori, I've heard of Bloomability but I don't think my girls read it, but I will double check with them. I sometimes I feel as if I am going through my second childhood as I read these stories because they are so wonderful.

  6. I do too! My sister-in-law just lent me Twilight. Melissa gives me that one raised eyebrow look.

  9. Kristine, you will have so much fun reading Sharon Creech. Another great children's author is Eleanor Estes (The Moffats, Ginger Pye). Baxter will enjoy these stories soon, too!
