Memes

Here a meme, there a meme, everywhere a meme, meme. I have become familiar with memes over the past year or so, which are quite popular with book bloggers. For those of you less familiar with memes, or who may just be interested in some clarification, here's a definition.

Meme
meme n (mëm): A unit of cultural information, such as a cultural practice or idea, that is transmitted verbally or by repeated action from one mind to another. From the Greek mimëma, something imitated, from mimeisthai, to imitate. (definition from Booking Through Thursday)

My favorite weekly memes are Mailbox Monday and Wondrous Words Wednesday, and although I don't get a chance to do them each week, I post them on a regular basis. They're a lot of fun to do, and I enjoy visiting other book blogs and connecting with other book bloggers. I find it interesting that many book bloggers, including myself, choose to do certain memes over and over again.

Here's a list of some of the weekly memes that populate the book blogosphere. For more information about any particular meme, click on the links provided below.

Mailbox Monday, hosted by Marcia from The Printed Page

Teaser Tuesday, hosted by MizB from Should Be Reading

Really Random Tuesday, a meme of my own creation!

Cover Attraction, also hosted by Marcia from The Printed Page

Library Loot, co-hosted by Eva from A Striped Armchair and Marg from The Adventures of an intrepid Reader

This is a partial list of weekly memes--there are many more, and I may add to this list occasionally. Which memes do you enjoy doing and why?

  4. Nice list of memes. I'm nosy, and I love peeking in other people's mailboxes, so I participate in Mailbox Monday and Wondrous Words Wednesday. Thanks for the shout out on WWW!

  5. Renee, the book sounds fascinating, doesn't it?!

Zibilee, thanks for your kind words.

    Natalie, memes are fun. :)

Bermudaonion, we do the same weekly memes (great memes think alike?).

Thank you all for the comments. More welcomed of course.

  6. Congrats to Thuy!

Personally, I'm not really a meme fan. I don't mind the Salon because it's sort of a free-for-all book talk type of thing, but many of the other memes are ones I don't enjoy. There are ones that I think are better - library loot, friday finds, monday mailbox - but I prefer to combine them all into one post instead of filling up a blog with them.

  7. Well I am envious, the lucky Thuy won this! The new series sounds intriguing, I have not read anything on the topic :)

I would so What's up on Mondays, IF I have completed or started something different! I like Wednesday cover attractions.. I do that regularly.

But with all others, I am not sure.. i sometimes do them for lack of having anything to post about. that's really it~

  8. congrats Thuy :)
The new Linda Weaver Clarke book sounds really good.
I'm a big fan of the 'meme' myself :) I enjoy a few of those myself, especially Weekly Geeks, Teaser Tuesdays and Sunday Salon. Wordless Wednesday too, I always enjoy searching for that perfect pic to post.

  9. It was originally meant (by Richard Dawkins) to be used to discuss those facets of culture that aren't biological, but which are passed down generation to generation (as a gene is the biological component).

  10. I've recently discovered the Book Blogger Hop, which is a lot of fun, and I've added it to this list.

  11. I've updated this list to include a meme of my own creation, Really Random Tuesday. This will give me the opportunity to post odds and ends, including winners of book giveaways, book news, mini book reviews, and other book-related tidbits. Hope some of you will give it a try--and make my Tuesday! :)
